Collecting Original Art - Three Myths Dispelled!

Collecting art is fun and gratifying. I have a small but growing collection of paintings from several artists and they bring me great joy. I want to dispel some myths that keep some people from collecting.

Myth: "The good art is in museums." Fact: Yes, there are wonderful works in our museums which are to be savored at every chance but the living, working artists of today are creating the museum pieces of tomorrow. Visit art galleries, show openings and follow artists online. Many artists have websites and active facebook pages on which you can follow their work as it evolves over their careers.
Myth: "I'm not an art connoisseur." Fact: Sure, some take art connoisseurship very seriously but perhaps the most important thing is if you connect with the art. Do you love it? Does it speak to you or recall a fond memory? That's powerful! If you fill your home with works that feed your soul then you are living an authentic life and your home reflects who you are!
Myth: "I can't afford original artwork." Fact: Great art is available at all price levels. If large studio pieces aren't in your budget, seek out smaller works by artists whose work you like. Additionally, sometimes artists will sell their sketches or field studies which can add a very unique facet to your collection. The best way to find these opportunities is to follow the artists directly on facebook, watch their websites and sign up for their newsletters. Many artists will also consider financing...just keep it short term and fair...it doesn't hurt to ask! |
If you have questions about any aspect of collecting just send me an email. We can even set up a time to talk.
All my best,
Scott
